National Signing Day kicked off the college football season for many last week as fans across the country watched TV breathlessly and refreshed smartphones and computers incessantly all to see what teenager is picking what college. It's usually a day of excitement, yet if you're a Badgers fan you can't help wonder what the fuss is about.

Like any big city, Milwaukee sometimes takes a wrong turn, stumbles a bit or makes a less than stellar decision. From flubbed sports deals to bad municipal decisions and personal errors that have city-wide repercussions, Milwaukee - like all of us - isn't perfect. The older I get, the more I seem to hear people refer to New Year's Eve as "amateur night." I'm not offended by this, but I'm perplexed and concerned about the lack of a celebratory spirit.

The University of Wisconsin may have a new head football coach in Gary Anderson, but it will be Barry Alvarez that leads the Badgers onto the field today in an effort to snap a two-game losing streak in the Rose Bowl against Stanford.

University of Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, a man of near mythic status in Madison, had a chance to really show some high-class style, but instead chose to wallow with the pigs in the pen.
