Football fans in Wisconsin will always bleed green and gold, as well as cardinal and white, but this state also supports their native sons with a passion - no matter what team they play for.

I never thought the referees were that important. Oh, I knew that they made some mistakes now and then and there were cases that seemed to live in infamy. But when you got down to it the officials weren't all that important to the game. We certainly know better now after the Green Bay Packers lost to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

Since the Packers are literally playing for nothing Sunday, by far the most pressing football game over the New Year's holiday takes place in Pasadena, Calif. at the venerable Rose Bowl Stadium, a place the Wisconsin football team has visited six times before. One year ago, the Badgers lost a heartbreaking 21-19 decision to TCU. Many Wisconsin players used the sting of that bitter defeat to help motivate them to avenge a loss to what they clearly felt was an inferior team

It was the best of halves, it was the worst of halves. Take that tale of two halves and flip it around, and you would have an accurate view of the inaugural Big Ten Championship football game. The record books will tell you that Wisconsin defeated Michigan State 42-39, but that won't come close to telling the story of how this game played out.

Never before have there been so many different major sporting events of national significance all at the same time on Badger State soil. Saturday and Sunday, of course, the Brewers hosted the Arizona Diamondbacks in Games 1 and 2 of the NLDS. Saturday night, the eyes of the football world were on Madison for the Big Ten debut of one of the most storied programs in the game, Nebraska. For the first time in memory, the Packers were the unquestioned (by rational people) undercard of the weekend, hosting the struggling Denver Broncos.
