"Milwaukee Brace" mends scoliosis for 60 years

We read about it in Judy Blume's "Deenie" and saw it in "Sixteen Candles" and "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," but is the Milwaukee Brace still used for scoliosis patients today? And why is it called the "Milwaukee Brace" anyway?
