You should commend yourself if you reach for a tube of sunscreen before heading outside on a hot summer day. But you should also know that not all sunscreens provide the same protection, and because of ample confusion in the marketplace, the government is seeking to make things a little more clear. Unfortunately, its plan is taking longer than anticipated.

Times have changed. Gone are the days, in large part, when folks slathered themselves in oil and set up shop on the beach for a few hours. We've still got a long way to go, but as a society, we've begun to recognize the dangers of overexposure to the sun's UV rays, which can cause skin cancer. But, most of us remember the more carefree days when we'd come indoors to find our skin the color of a lobster's.

Thursday night, Jim Mejchar grieved with the family and friends of Albert Heinowski, a fellow retired police officer who died of cancer. Friday night, he will celebrate his own survival through two rounds of the disease. The honorary survivor for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life will lead a victory lap to start the overnight walk around the track at Nathan Hale High School in West Allis.

Although skin cancer often claims lives, for some, it is a treatable illness. Two local men were diagnosed with skin cancer, but went on to live happy, fulfilling lives. In both cases, the cancer was caught early, which - as we have all heard - seems to be a key factor in surviving the disease.
