I've been thinking a lot about some of the national hot-button issues that are dominating the news. It seems that, without exception, Wisconsin isn't interested in changing the status quo. Why is that?

Ask bartenders and bar owners about the effects of the smoking ban in Wisconsin and the results will be all over the map. While the jury may still be out on how the ban is affecting the economics of the business, a UW-Milwaukee study says that bartenders in the state, "are reaping significant health benefits as a result of the state's new smoke-free law."

Most of my alcohol consumption takes place at home -- where I do not smoke -- or in bars -- where I can no longer smoke. And so, guess what? I don't really smoke anymore.

The smoking ban went into effect last July, and a lot of bar owners thought they would have to take measures to accommodate outdoor smoking. Most bars put ashtrays outside if they weren't there already, and some took it a step further.
