Apparently some of my friends who work Downtown was surprised to discover their favorite soul food restaurants was still open. As it turns out, they've been missing out on some wonderful food at Mr. Perkins' Family Restaurant, 2001 W. Atkinson Ave.

It's amazing that one of the most despicable periods in American history inspired delicious foods like southern fried chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, collard greens, chitlins, hush puppies, fried catfish, sweet potato pie, cole slaw and black-eyed peas. Lucky for us, Milwaukee has a few of the finest soul food restaurants in the Midwest.

Last month, Corey and Lamonica Smith introduced Milwaukee to a new restaurant and lounge called Soche, 2213 N. Martin Luther King Dr. So far, business exceeds the Smith's expectations.
