While my visit to the St. Francis complex that is home to the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi didn't uncover any evidence of tunnels and caves on the southern end of Bay View or anything like that - not that I necessarily thought it would, mind you, but, hey, you never know! - I by no means left disappointed.

Recently, Redbar opened in St. Francis. The space, which formerly housed Majdecki's and later, Cool Waters, has been remodeled inside and out. It's now aptly painted red and the interior is a tribute to aspects of Milwaukee history, from vintage beer signs to sports bobble heads to an antique motorcycle license plate.

Carrie Wisniewski and Nick Schell plan to open red.bar in mid-to-late July in the St. Francis space that was formerly Cool Water and before that Madjecki's.

Carleton Grange Pub, an oasis for fans of soccer and British pub atmosphere in St Francis, is closing for good Sept. 6. Eric Ellsworth, owner of the 5-year-old club at 3807 S. Packard Ave., cited road construction and parking problems in announcing the decision in an e-mail and on the bar's Web site.
