It's a long-standing tradition at Summerfest - and at plenty of other festivals - to use radio station DJs to introduce a headlining band. It may seem like a five-minute formality, but as usual, there's a back story to most of what the public sees while standing on the Summerfest bleachers.

Those who spend a lot of time on the East Side might see all those "For Lease" signs on retail spaces and wonder why more and more are being built: in The Standard on North Avenue, The Overlook in the old Prospect Mall, OaklandNorth on the old Pizza Man site. While those signs abound, there is also clearly a lot happening in the area that surrounds Farwell and North.

We all visit our office neighbor, Steve Palec, a lot. He has a lot of stories to share, plus he keeps Twinkies in the "coffee shop" he built in the corner of space. He's even constructed a nap room that we can borrow when needed. Well, Steve didn't build it. He had his employees paint it and furnish it. Steve asks his employees do a lot of weird stuff, actually, and they happily comply. And maybe it's time I took a lesson.
