This weekend, I found a tiny square photograph at my mom's house. It shows me and Mr. Pepper, my third and fourth grade teacher, in the auditorium of my grade school. The photo is small, but Mr. Pepper's influence on my life wasn't. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, I'm offering up an encore of this 2011 blog posting.

Residency rule makes good sense

I am all for freedom of choice in just about everything. I believe women should be free to make their own decisions about what to do with their own bodies. I believe we should all be free to vote without having to show identification cards and I believe that we should all be free to dance until dawn. Because of those deeply held beliefs I find that I face trouble when trying to determine exactly how I feel about residency requirements for employment.

One of the provisions of Governor Walker's  Budget Bill is  a ban on  teacher  residency requirements by Wisconsin School Boards.  Milwaukee is the only school district in the state to have such a requirement, which is embedded in the 4-year contract between MPS and MTEA....
