Debate rages over a hot corner in Oak Creek
Richard Rothen, who operates Cupid's Toys at 27th and Rawson, has an inkling that local officials don't want his business to thrive. Rothen has had license issues and believes that officials covet his location on the northeast corner of a busy intersection, for development. When a recent road repair was underway, Rothen found his store had been removed from a planning map.

Flynn concocts creative ways to spend seized funds
Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn, seeking to spend the slush fund known as "asset forfeiture expenditures," sent a laundry list of ideas to a Common Council committee last week. As usual, many of the items don't necessarily qualify as "proper spending" under federal guidelines. No one seems to care about that anymore.

Lawyers continue to reap from Jude case
The case of Frank Jude continues to haunt Milwaukee. And it continues to cost the city money. This time it will result in a settlement for two of Jude's companions on that ill-fated October 2004 night in Bay View. Kirsten Antonissen and Katie Brown filed a claim against the city saying their civil rights were violated that evening when police beat Jude to a bloody pulp.

Sheriff's department steps up park patrols
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department will take to the the parks this summer, literally. Sheriff David Clarke will add 10 deputies to the 24 already on patrol in the county's green spaces. Most of those deputies were at the lakefront handing out noise violation tickets last summer.

Conference speakers shoot the breeze about gun ban
It might not seem like the most popular topic given the timing, but Nate Nelson, a field representative for The Leadership Institute, told the Future Wisconsin Conservative Conference that his organization is trying to fight a ban on handguns at Virginia Tech University.
