The Uptowner was packed and not just for a late Sunday afternoon. Jock Jams blared from the speakers, and anticipation was in the air. On two TVs at separate ends of the bar, the Wisconsin-Michigan State game was coming down to the wire. But that wasn't the contest the excited and eager crowd was here to see. No, the main event was the Uptowner's third annual beard competition.

The Uptowner - aka "home of the beautiful people" - turns 130 this month and will celebrate with a free bash on Saturday, Sept. 20. Recently, we spent a Thursday afternoon listening to owner Steve Johnson's stories - as well as his wife Shawnette Smart's myriad tales. Some of the yarns were funny, some sad, some unfit to print, but all of them were told with the heart and wit that explain why the Uptowner has been frequented by so many people - from the uber glamorous to the down-and-out.

For the third year in a row, OnMilwaukee.com readers picked Nessun Dorma as Riverwest's best bar. The pub -- which is also a popular restaurant -- offers 80 different kinds of beer and lager, as well as a few dozen types of wine by the glass or bottle, including red, white, sparkling, sake and more.
