During the first two weeks of the month, Sept. 1-12, the Eat Local Milwaukee Challenge rallies Milwaukeeans to make more conscious decisions about what they consume and where it comes from. Most food travels an average of 15,000 miles from farm to fork, and when that number reduces, so does its carbon footprint on the planet.

Simply put, the CSA system connects local farmers with local consumers who become members or shareholders of the CSA by financing the farm's whole seasonal budget, including seeds, tools, maintenance and land payments. In return, they get weekly or monthly baskets of fresh, organic produce, fruits, flowers, herbs, eggs, milk -- anything the farm can produce.
