A former Milwaukee reporter was named to one of the most influential positions in journalism last week. What made Kevin Merida's promotion to managing editor of the Washington Post all the more satisfying to some folks in town was that he started his newspaper career right here in Brewtown.

Every time I read a travel piece about Milwaukee, it leads with beer and brats - and it really bugs me. An article is last week's Washington Post did it again, but this time it wasn't so bad.

The Washington Post, on Sunday, March 27, featured a rather glowing article about Milwaukee. The writer noted Art's Concertina Bar, the breweries, brats and bowling, but she also mentioned the new "Milwaukee of high culture and chic."
