Scattered around the Milwaukee area are roughly two dozen eye-catching stone cottages that look like they could've been moved from Normandy. But, you might be surprised to learn they were designed by a New York architect who also designed the Big Apple's Singer Building, a 47-story skyscraper that was, for three years, the tallest building in the world.

My first experience with Cranky Al's, 6901 W. North Ave., was during the Chili'n on the Ave event in Wauwatosa a few years back. Since then, I've been hearing about their pizza and their doughnuts - the crullers in particular.

Milwaukee: Each year, I feel I barely know the city at all. This fine city just keeps on giving in every direction. When compiling my long list each year of places I would love to have participate in Doors Open Milwaukee - a free-to-the-public event presented by Historic Milwaukee, Inc. that will take place on September 19th and 20th - I am sometimes asked by others, "What if you run out of new places to add to the event?" I laugh at this.
