If one were to imagine a location for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a legendary Italian progressive rock band in an extremely intimate setting, I doubt that Superior Street in Bay View would make the list. But Friday night brings the Italian Progressive Rock band Il Castello di Atlante to that very venue.

Despite the loss of some great indie record shops over the years, record stores are not dead. In fact, one is opening soon in Bay View, right up the street from what is likely the longest-lived record shop in town, Rush-Mor. Ken Chrisien, better known to local music fans as WMSE DJ Shopkeeper Ken, is living up to his on-air moniker and opening Acme Records and Music Emporium soon at 2341 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.

I'm a firm believer that even in a lean period (sure, that's an Orange Juice reference, why not?), there's always great music to be found. Sometimes you just have to look a little harder for it. Thanks to my go-to record shops - Zig-Zag, Bleecker Bob's and others in my old town and Atomic, Earwaves and Rush-Mor in my current one - I was able to easily get the best of the best in the 1980s. I'll play some of the music I mined in those places Wednesday night on WMSE.

This year's Record Store Day is Saturday, April 21, and The Exclusive Company will have free performances all day at its shops on the East Side (1669 N. Farwell Ave.), in Greenfield (5026 S. 74th St.) and in West Bend (144 N. Main St.).
