The Internal Revenue Service announced today that nearly $849,000 is waiting for Wisconsin taxpayers whose income tax refund checks were sent back to the IRS as undeliverable. That money is owed to 1,164 Wisconsinites, of whom 312 live in Milwaukee County. Their average check is $729.

According to the IRS, these checks can be reissued as soon as taxpayers correct or update their addresses. In some cases, a taxpayer has more than one check waiting.

"We want people to get the money that belongs to them," said IRS spokesperson Christopher Miller.

The "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov enables taxpayers to check the status of their refunds. A taxpayer must submit his or her Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2006 return. The tool will provide the status of their refund and in some cases provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.

Taxpayers can access an automated telephone version of "Where's My Refund?" by calling (800) 829-1954.
