This Saturday, March 22, Lena Taylor -- who is running for County Executive against Scott Walker -- will board the Route 20 bus on one of its final trips through Milwaukee. She will ride the bus, she says, to point out "Scott Walker's deplorable mismanagement of our transit system."
Here is more information, taken from an e-mail from Taylor's campaign manager, John Zapfel.
"The Route 20 bus is a vibrant and important part of the Milwaukee County transit system, connecting the North and South Sides of the city. This route not only provides the citizens of Milwaukee County with transportation, but also a history lesson -- this historic route runs along Caesar Chavez Drive and once passed by Borchert Field.
Today, the Route 20 bus is in jeopardy and soon will be cut by Scott Walker. Through misguided fiscal planning, Mr. Walker made the decision to cut bus routes and increase public transit fares. This has produced a public transit system that is ineffective and cost-inefficient at a time when rising gas prices are boosting public transportation ridership throughout the rest of the country.
We deserve better. This Saturday, we hope you'll join us in standing together and standing strong against the mismanagement. Lena will start at the Route 20 bus stop at 12th and Wisconsin, in front of Gesu Church. We will ride the 4:08 p.m. bus east to the Downtown Transit Center and ride back to 12th and Wisconsin leaving the center on the 4:35 p.m. bus."

Milwaukee has the only transit system in the country that has lost riders over the years. I don't know that it's the best idea to increase the price of a ride to $2.00, then cut routes which makes it inconvenient for some people paying that extra fare.

Lena Honey you need to get your facts straight. Your Good Buddy Jim Doyle took all and may I say again All the money for mass transit and spent it on all your pet projects in the State Senate.Stay in the Senate and represent your constiuents properly instead of running for another office you could not ever hope to manage as well as Scott Walker has.Maybe the County Board will have those dumb bike racks they approved on the bus you ride Saturday. O Joy From an overtaxed hard working family businessman who cares about Tommorow just a little differently than you do. Spend Less Tax Money and Listen More.

Like everyone else, I'm NOT for raising taxes. But if we need services (mass transit, parks, roads, etc.) and there is truly no money to fix or sustain these services, then I sincerely don't have a problem with raising the necessary taxes to do so. Walker has backed himself so into a hole with his campaign pledge of "no new taxes" that he is cutting valuable services that people need and want. This is visionary leadership?!? I think not.

Oh joy, this sounds like big fun! Is this a campaign piece, an event, editorial or a campaign piece for Ms. Taylor. Whatever it is, Milwaukee needs a transit plan that goes beyond fuel inefficient and non-effective buses. Both Taylor and Walker can't seem to make that happen. Riding a bus won't solve our region's bigger picture transit problems. Sadly, Gov. Doyle already wasted a billion paying off the road builders and losing that money which could have been used for better mass/higher technology transit.

Fortunately Lena's solution to all of the county's woes is simply to raise taxes.
