Ald. Joe Davis, Sr. introduced a capital improvement project to implement a high-speed light rail system in Milwaukee.

Committee discusses Davis' light rail proposal

Ald. Joe Davis, Sr. introduced a capital improvement project to implement a high-speed light rail system in Milwaukee at a Common Council Finance and Personnel Committee meeting Friday.

"When people have greater access to all parts of our city and even to our suburbs, they have greater access to jobs and economic opportunity," said Davis.

"I work with the NLC (National League of Cities) across the country and in every city, in every discussion, public transportation is significantly more advanced outside the Milwaukee area. We must bring our city into the here and now and take advantage of the opportunities better transportation provides and the immediate necessity for public transportation we face."

According to a statement from Davis' office, the amendment drew "heavy discussion" and will be brought to the full council on Nov. 7.

"The design and implementation of light rail doesn't just bring Milwaukee up to par with the rest of the country or provide access to suburban communities. Light rail is a viable way to leverage federal dollars and open up the amount of development, fiscal and cultural opportunities Milwaukee deserves." Ald. Davis said.

I think its about time that Milwaukee get a Light Rail System. It has been in the works for years and can only be a benefit to the city its suburbs and the entire area as a whole. Hopefully with Scott Walker out of county govnmt, Milwaukee, hopefully will prosper, unfortunately he is at the State level where he can do more damage like lose the state 10,000 which he just did this week by sending back Federal Moneys. Light Rail will provide new jobs, help improve transit in Milwaukee, and will also make it easier for visitors to get around. It's a win win all around. Kudos to Mr. Davis for the added push and to Mayor Barrett who has been pushing Light Rail for years but has been slapped back by ultra conservative, narrow minded Scott Walker.

dvm, those routes are great, but the system you described would cost over $2 billion. We need to start small and expand as people realize how important and useful transit is to our future as a region.

also, with additional, more convenient transportation, the amount of drunk driving might hopefully decline:)

Just like it's good for Milwaukee to have an NBA franchise and the Art Museum it would be good for the city as a whole to have a better transit system. Many people in the suburbs work in downtown, how can a faster, easier, less expensive way to work be a bad thing?

Love it! In a city this size our mass transit system is embarassing and severely lacking. I find it funny that city dwellers like myself think its a great idea but suburbanites hate it. They dont want "us" having easier access to their precious burbs.
