A few weeks ago, the city learned that we are the eighth poorest medium-sized city in the country. For some, this was alarming, but for others, the information is simply a confirmation of what was already suspected.
But what about you? Do you witness Milwaukee's poverty on a daily basis, or have you managed to somehow escape it? Sound-off, Milwaukee, and tell us what you really think.
Yes, I feel the affects of poverty. In my daily life, I see many signs of poverty in Milwaukee, from garbage to homeless citizens to houses in serious need of cosmetic work. I believe it has gotten worse in the past few years and I continue to see poverty's affect on Milwaukee.
No, I really don't feel the affects of poverty. In my world, Milwaukee's poverty is something I am aware of through the local news and newspapers, but I don't really see it on a daily basis.

Its time to address the source of poverty, and crime. High unemployment in the center city, a school system that is failing our youth, not becouse of a lack of excelent teachers but a lack of funding and the No child left behind mentality of teaching to a test so coservitives can "prove" that teaching should be done by private schools. We need to reinvest in the infastructure of our poorest neighbourhoods, and stop bickering about public transport. its time we all work together to build a fairer Milwaukee of all of us not only those lucky enough to be born wealthy.

One day coming home from school I turned on the TV only to find the roof on my house on the news. Another shooting? car accident? drug bust? no it was none of these. Unfortunately, a homeless person died when his/her tent caught fire on the sixth street hill. Whether I am at home or on campus at Marquette poverty is real and affects many of our fellow citizens. Luckily for those in the suburbs not much poverty can be seen from the freeway. It would be awful for them to feel uncomfortable.

To me, Milwaukee is like a bunch of ships passing in the night. For the purposes of an online survey, maybe only two: we over-educated, under-reproducing (mostly) white Internet denizens, and everybody else. It seems difficult, if not impossible, to have dialogue between the groups. For example, it's been difficult for me, having grown up on the North Shore, to interact with lower- middle-class whites from the South Side. We just don't know what to make of each other. It's not difficult to extrapolate to encounters between ethnic groups and races. As a lifelong Milwaukeean, I am simply exhausted by all of these issues and haven't the faintest idea where solutions could be found.
