The interior of the "mother ship" on ABC's new sci-fi series "V" does look like Santiago Calatrava had a hand in its design, but there's no evidence that it's any more than a coincidence. ... Wauwatosa's Grace Weber sings for Oprah Winfrey's national audience. ... And AMC's "Mad Men" ends a fine season.

For a while, "An American Werewolf In London" was the most popular video to rent or buy in the world. That was before DVD's, in the long ago days of videotape, back in the mid-1980s. It is still worth a look for several reasons. First, because it was the film that forced the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to start giving an Academy Award for makeup design. And, it marked a big step for writer/director John Landis.

"Soul Power" spends too little time onstage

If you've seen a concert film before, you know that there's more to films in this genre than concert footage. Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same" had lots of crazy offstage stuff, to offer just one example. "Soul Power," a new film from director Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, is no different.

In the most unlikely of solutions to the violence and anger spread after the 1992 L.A. riots, residents of the South Central neighborhood came together to create a 14-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda. It was a form of healing, and it became the largest community garden in the United States.

Metcalf's Screening Room: "Inglourious Basterds"

Movie violence can be gratuitous, but it can also be elegant and exciting. That describes Quentin Tarantino's latest film. All in all, it's a fun popcorn movie. It doesn't break any new ground, but it may take old familiar Tarantino ground to new levels of fun and indulgence. And the name, "Inglourious Basterds," misspelled, in only the way a boy from Tennessee might spell it if he was called upon to create a myth.

Metcalf's Screening Room: "District 9"

South African director Neill Blomkamp based this movie on a short film of his called "Alive In Joburg." It has no known stars in it, unless South African audiences know them. Peter Jackson, who directed the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "King Kong," produced. That alone may be enough recognition to market the film to the broad audience that it deserves. The script is wonderfully layered, the concept both frightening and funny, with all kinds of political and sociological connections. The execution is great.
