Summerfest in review: Day 3
It's hard to top seeing a guitar legend, but Saturday at Summerfest wasn't even close to a let down.
I got to see Milwaukee rock band Arkady (which features members of the West Bend band Elements of Style), followed by the fast-paced west coast rock-and-roll of the Ferocious Few, the '70s muscular rock and soul of New York band the London Souls and then see legends ZZ Top provide their bearded rock and roll and also feed my unquenchable thirst for Tom Petty's timeless rock and roll.
Arkady: For the uninitiated, Arkady is a fairly new Milwaukee band that's had some luck go their way. Their song "Europa" got selected for the Rock Band game even before the band played a show which certainly helped get their name out.
Featuring an hard rock/punk/post-punk influenced sound with catchy pop tune, the band certainly exceeded in further getting their name out with a great set. They ended their set with their excellent "Call it Crashing" which saw the band roar into a charging rocker.
The band mentioned during the show that their five-song debut release, "I Am Become" is due for release this summer on Catlick Records.
The Ferocious Few: Hailing from San Francisco, the punk rock and rockabilly duo put on a great show for a fairly meager crowd.
Their set featured a mix of frantically rambling guitars and drums and also an acoustic number or two. Sometimes it felt like they might be more suited for a club gig than a major festival and occasionally struggled to fill the stage with sound, but overall, they provided a pretty good set of music.
The London Souls: Take the hard driving power of '70s driving guitar rock somewhat in the vein of the Hendrixs, etc. and the soul of a metropolitan area like New York and The London Souls might pop up on as one of the bands you find.
The band offered the double-whammy of two great singers with some great guitar playing. It was a fun set, and the crowd which was larger by that point, ate it all up.
ZZ Top: The bearded rockers used their second night opening for Petty as another chance to dive into their rugged blues rock hits. I was never a big ZZ Top fan but they put on a pretty good show, complete with a good stage setup.
Tom Petty: Last night's show was the fourth time I've seen Petty and it was another chance to enjoy some great rock and roll from a legendary singer and world-class talented musicians like the Heartbreakers.
There's always something new at the shows to look forward to as well as the reliability of the hits to deliver.
Highlights included "King's Highway" (off their "Into the Great Wide Open" album), "Breakdown," and four songs off their latest album, "Mojo."
I'm glad to see Petty give the reggae tinged tune "Don't Pull Me Over" a spin in the live setting.
