My brief return to competitive eating
Last summer, I declared myself retired from the world of competitive eating. After sub-par showings with a four-pound hamburger, then in the State Fair cream puff competition, I realized my talents were perhaps best spent somewhere else.
But my inner FOMO (fear of missing out) complex has again reared its ugly head, and I foolishly agreed to participate in a baked potato eating contest tonight at 5 p.m. To the best of my knowledge, it's only one baked potato, which doesn't sound so hard. I don't know the other details, and frankly, I don't want to until I get there.
Also, this year, my colleague Bobby Tanzilo will be competing alongside me, so the chances of an OnMilwaukeean bringing home the gold are now double.
Working against me is the fact that we already live blogged the opening of State Fair, and being your faithful Guinea pig, I tried the deep-fried butter (so you don't have to). I also had a glass of Herb Kohl's strawberry milk and some buffalo wings on a stick.
So, yes, I'm already in somewhat of a food coma with just a few hours to recover my will to gorge myself.
If you'd like to come down to root us on – or heckle us – please do. The event takes place at the Wisconsin Products Pavilion on Central Avenue.
Wish Bobby and me luck, and happy State Fair!
