De La Soul is not dead
De La Soul took the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage Saturday at about 10:15 p.m. and delivered a fun show that was heavily based on audience participation. The ongoing banter pitted one side of the audience against the other, as band members Posdnuos and Plug Two took turns suggesting who was more hip-hop, stage left or stage right. (It was never made clear who won, but of course, that wasn't really the point.)
Overall, the show was infused with energy and the band looked inspired although the usual DJ was not on board and, instead, Prince Paul – who produced many of their albums – took on the scratcher's role.
Usually, band members include Kelvin Mercer (AKA Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicouer (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) and Vincent Mason (P.A. Pasemaster Mase, Maseo, Plug Three, Baby Huey).
During the performance, songs included "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays,'" "Potholes In My Lawn," "Ego Trippin (Part Two)" and the most popular pick, "Me, Myself and I," which was an MTV hit in its day.
The band made a few jokes about Britney Spears, who was playing on the Marcus Ampitheater simultaneously. At one point the audience was asked, "What happened? Why aren't you checking out Britney?" The comment was responded to with a chorus of "boos."
Formed in 1987 in Long Island, New York, De La Soul is probably most known for the song "Me, Myself and I" and "Three Is the Magic Number," both of which appeared on their 1989 album, "Three Feet High and Rising." This humorous, quirky-sampled masterpiece showed another side of hip hop, one that appealed to "real" rap fans and also served as a daisy-adorned gateway for others who weren't hip to to the hop.
De La Soul went on to release multiple albums which were similar in style and included "skits," but none reached the mainstream success level as "Three Feet." However, a large fan base continued to support the group and they have been inspirations to many bands and musicians, including The Black Eyed Peas and Mos Def. (Posdnuos referenced The Peas tonight when he said, "I like my Black Eyed Peas on Sundays!")
In 2006, De La Soul won a Grammy for the single, "Feel Good, Inc.," performed with The Gorillaz.
It is always refreshing to see a diverse crowd at Summerfest, and, indeed, the De La Soul concert featured an audience from multiple corners of life. Unfortunately, the show was short, clocking in at a mere one hour and five minutes, and without an encore. However, the chance to see the iconic De La Soul means something, especially to those of us who literally wore out our cassette of "Three Feet High And Rising" back in the day.
"We've been doing this for over 22 years," said Posdnuos. "There ain't no stop to us."

I saw them at the Riverside last year and it was great, but I had lesser expectations for an outoodr appearance. Not sure why, but I'm not surprised to hear it wasn't as good.

Oh that's fine. I just didn't know if I was the only one that was disappointed in the show. The theatrics were great, but fell short everywhere else.

It was my fault, Wez. I was scheduled to review it and didn't feel well. I was unable to find a replacement in time.
