Gerry O'Brien's European Grocery and Fran's Italian Deli, 6732 W. Fairview Ave., in the shadow of I-94, closed its doors on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
The small, neighborhood grocery store was run by O'Brien, raised in England by Irish parents, and his Italian-American wife, Fran, whom O'Brien met in Milwaukee.
Citing slow business and high costs, O'Brien had lately expressed interest in selling the shop, which for nearly a decade sold imported foods from Britain, Ireland and Italy, alongside basic groceries. After the closing of Bits of Britain is Waukesha a few years ago, O'Brien's had become one of the last places in town to stock a selection of British and Irish foods.
O'Brien is now working as a meatcutter at Grasch's Foods in Brookfield.

Gerry has opened a new store at 9226 W. Bluemound Road in Milwaukee. The store does not have a meat counter or deli but does offer a wide selection of Irish and English foods, including bangers and Irish bacon (frozen). Website is http://www.gerryobriens.com.

Jill said: Mike: I've been there. It is a very nice store. However I'm going to miss the charm our Gerry's store. I'd rather support the family-run businesses than chains when I can.

Newbomb Turk said: Very disappointing. Where am I going to find Turkish Delight to make my dentist rich? Or Christmas crackers during the holidays? Won't be the same getting this stuff on-line.

Jill said: This is really sad news for my family. Where are we going to get pudding, Irish bacon, and Irish butter; not to mention Gerry's homemade hot Hungarians now? He made the best homemade sausages. Gerry and family...my family will really miss your store!
