Harvest Fair at State Fair Park wraps up the festival season
For the most part, Milwaukee's festival season has come and gone for another year. But for those looking for one last hurrah, look no further than State Fair Park, where you can celebrate autumn at Harvest Fair.
The annual, free event kicks off Friday with activities for people of all ages, including the Milwaukee festival staples of food, beer and live music.
"Harvest Fair is truly a terrific opportunity to get out and enjoy the weather," says State Fair Communications Manager Patrice Harris. "There's live entertainment on three stages, harvest themed activities such a pumpkin bowling and scarecrow making, and it's an opportunity to enjoy the Fair fare all over again."
Families can take part all kinds of fun, including hay rides, pumpkin bowling, fishing fountains, train rides, a petting zoo and pumpkin picking. Some activities require additional tickets, available for $1 apiece.
For the adults, Benno's Micro Tent will be open, featuring micro and craft beers from various state breweries and the Wineberry Bar and Lounge will be open all weekend.
Those who didn't get their fill of State Fair staples back in August can get their favorite fair foods from Benno's, Catalano's Beer & Pizza, Catfish Johnny's, Krautland, Mille's, Mr. Ed's Chuckwagon and more. In all, 22 concessionaires will be open for business this weekend.
Also, Elegant Farmer will be at the fair, offering their trademark Apple Pie in a Bag, pumpkin pies and dessert breads.
There truly is something for everyone," Harris says.
Admission is free but parking at State Fair Park will cost you $5. For more information, visit wistatefair.com.
New activites for 2011:
Family Activity Center (Original Cream Puff Pavilion): Kids can decorate caramel apples and giant cookies and also make their mark on the Harvest Fair Mural with a leaf print. The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music will perform Saturday and Sunday.
Natural Resources Park: Open Saturday and Sunday, families can explore the Pioneer Days Interactive Display where they can get their picture taken with a covered wagon and play pioneer games. Kids can also use stereoscopes, old-fashioned egg beaters and get hands-on with artifacts from the Milwaukee County Historical Society and Trimborn Farms.
Members of the SouthEast Wisconsin Garden Masters will be on-hand as well, answering gardening questions in the Model Backyard exhibit at DNR Park.
Rainbow Amusement Carnival: Located just north of the Wisconsin Exposition Center, kids and adults can hop on some of their favorite carnival rides.
Souper Sunday (Sunday, 10 a.m.): New in 2011, various local restaurants will show off their best seasonal soups, which will be available for sampling. Again, additional tickets will be required.
