Morris Day and The Time: Smoking hot at the Harley Roadhouse stage
Morris Day, where have you been?
Oh, I know, there have been solo albums, a self-imposed retirement and a shuffling of members of The Time. Hard to believe it is 27 years since "Purple Rain" made stars of you and your mirror.
Morris Day and The Time fell off our radar for a decade or two. After Wednesday night's show at the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse at Summerfest, we must ask, how did that happen? Day and the band were smoking hot and in total command of the game that defines his concerts.
A little bit of funk, a larger dose of R&B, and plenty of comic theater has been the recipe for Day's success since the early '80s.
Assuming the persona of a playboy dandy with a pencil thin mustache, the singer primps and preens on stage, assisted by a mirror-toting valet. He is the master of the arched eyebrow, the sly glance and the gift-to-all-women ego.
Add choreographed dance routines with his sidemen and valet, and you have the Morris Day experience.
The singer worked his way through a set list Wednesday night that included all of his hits with The Time as well as a few numbers from his solo albums. "Cool," "Get It Up," "Oak Tree," "777-9311," "Gigolos Get Lonely, Too," "My Drawers," "The Bird" – he sang them all. "Jungle Love" was the raucous encore.
Only two original members of The Time, Monte Moir and Jellybean Johnson, were onstage at the Harley Roadhouse. Sylvester Donald filled Jerome Benton's role of valet and occasional percussionist.
The hard working Day told the audience the perspiration they saw flying off of him onstage wasn't really sweat. It was evidence of how cool he is inside. "This is condensation," he explained.

Sad to have missed this show, but this terrific review almost makes me feel that I was there!
