Help Summerfest sing its 2011 swan song this weekend
There are just two days of Summerfest left, but that's plenty of time to get your gig on. Here are some suggestions for hearing some great music before they roll up the stages and stow them until next year.
Saturday's headliner is perhaps the glitziest of the event, with pop star Britney Spears topping the bill. But assuming that's not your cup of tea, here are some other suggestions.
Milwaukee's own BoDeans headline the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard at 10 and since the band has a new record, "Indigo Dreams," out this summer and Sam Llanas is prepping his new solo record, "4 A.M.," it seems a safe bet you'll get to hear some new tunes from the duo.
But there is also a trio of respected and long-lived alt.rock bands on tap, too.
The Flaming Lips, who put on a stellar show not long ago at The Riverside, are back to top the bill at the Harley Roadhouse at 10.
Meanwhile, over at the U.S. Cellular Connection Stage, Flaming Lips' '80s contemporaries The Meat Puppets play at 8. Read Molly Snyder's interview with the band's Curt Kirkwood here. They're followed by Illinois' Alkaline Trio at 10.
If a trip down radio pop memory lane is more your style, the breezy '70s Cali sound of America will waft from the M&I Classic Rock Stage at 10.
The best bets of the day that aren't headlining? Herman Astro and Ezra Furman & the Harpoons at 5:30 and 6:45 p.m., respectively, on the U.S. Cell.
On Sunday, sunny pop chanteuse Sara Bareilles opens for Sugarland at the Amp. I interviewed her last week and you can read about her love for Alterra and Milwaukee here.
Then, there's a little something for everyone on Sunday to help close out Summerfest 2011.
Reggae and R&B fans may choose Toots & the Maytals at 9 on the Classic Rock Stage, while classic rockers and power poppers might opt for Todd Rundgren at 9:30 under the Potawatomi big top.
Ska-laced Omaha rockers 311 will please the skaters at 10 p.m. on the Miller Lite Oasis and mellower cats may pick Amos Lee at 9:30 at the Big Backyard.
Hollywood Undead headlines the Rock Stage and The Bravery shuts things down at the U.S. Cell.
The best bet on the undercard is globetrotting guitar wiz Evan Christian, who warms up the crowd for Lee at the Big Backyard at 8 p.m.
Head down to the Lakefront and help Summerfest 2011 sing its swan song this weekend Milwaukee.
