Former Melody Maker Stephen Marley brings an ace drum and bass team with him to Summerfest on July 2.

Summerfest picks: Bobby Tanzilo

As always, the Summerfest lineup has at least a little something for nearly everyone. Here are some of the shows I'm interested in checking out.

June 29 – There's too much fun on the 30th, so I'm resting up to make a big Big Gig debut splash tomorrow.

June 30 – The living legend of funk George Clinton headlines the Big Backyard at 8 p.m. and that's the place to be, if you ask me. From his the doo-wop days of the 1950s Parliaments, Clinton was a creative fixture on the R&B scene for decades. Later, the Parliaments were part of the Detroit soul scene, then Funkadelic blurred the lines between rock and funk and Parliament made some of the most exciting music of the '70s. He'll likely focus on those later years, and on the solo career that followed. Then check out rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson at 10 p.m. under the Potawatomi big top.

July 1 – Check out Milwaukee's own I'm Not A Pilot, headlining the Cascio Interstate Music Groove Stage at 10 p.m. Epic rock, with a dash of strings and solid melodies will make for a great night under the stars.

July 2 – While my tastes in reggae don't always point to the recent crossover successes of the likes of Stephen Marley, I respect his work with the Melody Makers over the years, and I'm hoping to run into the stellar drum and bass team of Squidly Cole and Christopher Meredith, who I first met in Milwaukee in 1985. Harley Roadhouse at 10 p.m.

July 3 – If you like ancient (read '70s) rootsy rock, check out Don Felder. For a later vision of how American roots music could meld with pop, The Jayhawks play tonight, too. But I'm getting there early to see Milwaukee's own kings of roots and roll, Juniper Tar, at 4:15 p.m. on the U.S. Cellular stage.

July 5 – Celebrate Milwaukee's thriving local music scene by heading over to the Cascio Interstate Groove Stage to see Elusive Parallelograms at 6 p.m., Faux Fir at 7:30 and The Fatty Acids at 9 p.m.

July 6 – The Black Keys are headlining Summerfest. 'Nuff said.

July 7 – Another great day to check out the homegrown talent. Brew City ex-pat Mark Mallman headlines the Cascio stage at 9 p.m., retro-soul superstars Kings Go Forth top the bill at the Big Backyard at 8 p.m. and The Wildbirds are on tap at 6:45 p.m. on the U.S. Cell.

July 8 – Head over to Potawatomi tent at 10 p.m. to check out the vintage soul of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Maybe some Kings Go Forth members will leap onstage for an all-star soul jam. Or maybe not.

July 9 – Alt.rock legends The Meat Puppets – who most recently played here at Club Garibaldi – are on the U.S. Cellular stage at 8 p.m. Then sally over to Harley Roadhouse to see the equally respected Okie psychedelic popsters The Flaming Lips, whose Riverside gig last year was stellar.

July 10 – Toots and whoever the Maytals are these days headline the Classic Rock Stage. While Toots Hibbert's most recent material hasn't quite lived up to his earlier material, he is undoubtedly a living legend of Jamaican music. The Maytals got their start during the ska era, during which they were huge and continued to churn out hits until the mid-'70s. So, why not close out Summerfest 2011 with a real musical giant?

"So, why not close out Summerfest 2011 with a real musical giant?" 311 has their own day (March 11th), started a different kind of music genre, and put on an amazing show. You are going to see the Toots and the Maytals? Really? Have fun closing with a real musical giant.

Thanks, Bobby! Your list is great (and to think I was afraid this year's lineup was entirely terrible). See you at the Clinton show :)
