What does Summerfest still need?

Social Circle: "What would you like to see changed at Summerfest?"

Welcome to a new weekly segment called "Social Circle." It's OnMilwaukee.com's first article that's truly a group effort between readers, social networkers and the OnMilwaukee.com editors.

Every Monday, we will ask a question via Facebook and Twitter and then post the responses from our Facebook "likers" and Twitter followers in the Thursday column. Well-known Milwaukee movers-and-shakers will contribute, too.

Summerfest is a high point of summertime for many Milwaukeeans – and OnMilwaukee.com is downright passionate about it – but for this week's Social Circle question, we asked for constructive criticism for the Big Gig.

Surprisingly, not one person suggested more cowbell. However, here are some thoughts on how Summerfest can improve, and feel free to add your own ideas via the Talkback feature.

Then, we'll compile a list featuring a portion of these Summerfest suggestions and present it to vice president of sales and marketing John Boler. Boler, like all Summerfest employees, is in the midst of a pre-fest frenzy, but he looks forward to addressing some of the issues raised in this column. We'll print his responses next week.

Lori Ahrenhoerster: "No smoking on the grounds, and actually have it enforced."

Kevin Frank: "It's great and all to be the 'biggest' music festival, but when a large amount is filler bands is it worth the length and time? I think it could easily be less days and open later so every band on every stage is worth seeing, not a band I can see any weekend at some other festival in Milwaukee. Give local bands a stage but the rest should be national acts."

Thomas J. Keeley: "I think they should sell VIP passes for the free shows that would get you a good view without having to wait all day. Could be another sponsorship opportunity, too. I know they have the VIP areas, but they are usually for groups."

Adam Levin: "I can think of a few petty things but Milwaukee is fortunate to have Summerfest. Most cities in the country would give anything for one."

Nate Norfolk: "The festival itself is too insular, and lacks creative beverage and dining experiences. I wish there was more cross promotion so out-of-towners could get a broader experience of the city."

Melissa Paap-Young: "I would love it if the drinks were more reasonably priced. But I love that they have the 'freeway flyers' to take you back to park and rides. My favorite thing is not having to park Downtown and walk in."

Seiche R. Sanders: "The website is horribly organized with few features, and if they have an iPhone app this year, I can't find it."

Seth Snyder: "More micro beers. And more food on sticks."

Becky Tesch: "Less junky junk in the marketplace. Instead, have a local artisan tent with affordable booths for local handmade items."

Monica Thomas: "I miss the Summerfest pin promo. Used to be nice knowing I could get in for free guaranteed vs. having to stand in line in the heat with my Cedar Crest ice cream lids or non-perishable foods for an hour just to be told they're all out."

Mary Thompson: "I would love it to be less crowded but I don't see how that's possible."

Lucky Tomaszek: "I've heard that years ago, the headliners started earlier in the evening (I didn't live here then, so I don't know if it's true). I'd like that. My 10-year-old is dying to see Owl City this year, but it's a 10 p.m. show. I don't relish the thought of having him down there that late with the grounds full of drunk adults."

Keith C. White: "The front section of bleachers should be removed for nighttime performers."

Mark Zellner: "Lower ticket prices and beer prices."

Need to have main acts during the day, or at least starting @ 4pm or so. Someone else mentioned the "pin" promo. that would be good to.

The search and pat down for entering Summerfest. Im surprised people are not complaining about this ? It takes the fun out of going to Summerfest. Ive been searched an told I could not bring in a candy bar ! Its like Gestapo tactics. Also the loud speaker messages outside Summefest blasting what you cannot bring in. Its irritating ! I think this has gone too far

Any rap concert besides Talib Kwali would be good. More than one would be great.

I think that the bleachers should be removed from all of the music area except for the handicapped. It is the worst way to see a show dancing on a bleacher afraid that you are going to fall off! I can never see either!!!
