Owl City flies into the Big Gig
Owl City - that is, producer and multi-instrumentalist Adam Young, who is the creative force behind Owl City's music and much of its instrumentation - made a quick name for itself in 2009 with the release of "Ocean Eyes." The electronic synth-pop sound of its first major label release and quadruple platinum single, "Fireflies," catapulted the band's name to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart and brought its music to the attention of millions around the world.
Just last month, Owl City followed up the platinum success of "Ocean Eyes" with the release of "All Things Bright And Beautiful." Young and his touring band have been on a nationwide tour to promote the album, which includes a Summerfest stop tonight at the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse.
OnMilwaukee.com caught up with singer/songwriter and Minnesota native Adam Young in advance of his 10 p.m. headlining show.
OnMilwaukee.com: How does being involved in so many aspects of your music help your creative process?
Adam Young: I've always found something quite inspiring about working in a room surrounded with instruments because to me, a guitar or a synth is a vehicle that can take me wherever my imagination might choose to go. I love the idea of writing music as a personal escape from reality, the idea of "dealing with life" by writing music about it - or about everything BUT real life, however you choose to look at it. I love how music can make someone feel so blissfully alive, and ultimately, I love getting completely lost in that feeling.
OMC: What opportunities and/or challenges come along with collaborating with so many other artists?
AY: The thing I love about collaborating is the unexpected. You're never sure how a given piece of work is going to turn out, be it a solo work or a collaborative effort, and when the final result turns out much better than anything you had envisioned, that's a truly rewarding feeling. I love watching songs evolve from house plants into redwoods.
OMC: How has your musical style grown since releasing your hit album, "Ocean Eyes," in 2009?
AY: I might say it's become a bit older and wiser. It's a bigger sound, more mature, more polished, more resilient. I've got a more conclusive vision for whatever I happen to be working on - that is to say, I can generally hear the first few chords/melodies of a given song and immediately hear what it should sound like as a mixed/mastered print. As with anything, I feel like the more you work at it, the more you perfect your craft and I try to take pride in my work, whatever it is.
OMC: What are you most looking forward to about playing Summerfest?
AY: The hot dogs! I love Milwaukee and I'm a genuine Midwestern boy so the city is like a big extended family to me!
OMC: Fans can probably expect to hear a lot of songs off of your new album, but is there any brand new music or old favorite they can also look forward to hearing?
AY: Certainly. We play quite the eclectic assortment of new and old songs, some songs re-designed, re-imagined from the inside out, some new twists and turns, a couple rabbit holes, one or two wild goose chases, etc. It's a jolly good time.
