The Tomato Romp! returns to the East Side in September
The fruit will fly on the East Side this fall as the Tomato Romp! returns for its fifth year along North Avenue between Prospect and Oakland.
The Romp! celebrates all things tomato from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 with a tomato-centric East Side Green Market in the Beans & Barley parking lot, the city's Best Bloody Mary competition and, of course, the world famous rotten tomato fight.
Rompers 21 and older can sample and vote for the best East Side Bloody out of 13 participating bars and restaurants beginning at 11 a.m. Ballots can be purchased for $15 and include a 5-ounce sample and beer chaser at each stop. The champion and fan favorite will be crowned at 4 p.m.
Tomato fans looking for "seedier" fun can sign up for the 4 p.m. Tomato Fight in the former Pizza Man lot. Participants 16 and older can sign up for $5 to get in on the food fight free-for-all and leave with a souvenir T-shirt. All proceeds go towards combating hunger in the community.
The day also includes live entertainment and tomato treats along the North Avenue for all spectators throughout the event.
Sponsors include Pinnacle Vodka, Milwaukee Brewing Company, Educators Credit Union, Maglio & Company and OnMilwaukee.com.

The tomatoes are rotten. Maglio stores their "unsellable" and overripe tomatoes throughout the season just for this fight.

Wouldn't these tomatoes be better served as food, for people?
