Vans Warped Tour: July 31
The Vans Warped Tour is coming back in town. This day-long music marathon – which returns to the Summerfest grounds Wednesday – has been called "punk rock summer camp" in some circles.
Folks on the other side of the argument have called it a "shopping mall mosh pit" and a haven for sweaty teenagers with skateboards, tattoos, piercings, black makeup, fishnet tights, mohawks, faux-hawks, Chuck Taylors and questionable taste in music that draws them to similar-sounding songs of less than three minutes in length.
Though the Warped Tour still seems to have an edge showcasing bands that could actually break through to bigger things, it's hard for something as entrenched on the youth radar to be considered anything but part of the establishment.
Some folks love the co-mingling of punk, alternative, emo, hardcore, ska and a touch of hip-hop at a bargain price – 75 bands for about $40 (after fees). Others denounce the commercialization of giant corporations pushing products on impressionable youngsters with fists full of disposable income.
Where: Henry Maier Festival Park, 200 N. Harbor Dr.
Hours: 11 a.m. until roughly 9 p.m.
Admission: $47.50 (after fees)
Tips: Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of cash and buy a schedule to make sure you don't miss your favorite band . Check out the "Reverse Daycare" – a place where kids can drop off parents to enjoy air conditioning and water . Stay cool at the misting station and slip 'n' slide ... Bring a water bottle – the Warped Tour is hosting free Kleen Kanteen filtered water refilling stations to help take the sting out of beverage buying.
