There are staple foods and goods that I wouldn't want to miss at the State Fair. |

There are aspects of the Wisconsin State Fair I absolutely love.
Thanks to a combination of copious amounts of fatty food, top-notch people watching, pitchmen pushing gadgets and of course, more farm animals than you can handle, I'm always game for at least a couple hours at the Fair each year.
The obvious Fair standards like cream puffs, frozen bananas on a stick, sour cream and chive fries or fresh roasted corn stand on their own, drawing long lines and rave reviews. But in my years of wandering the Fair grounds, I've found a few lesser-known dining specialties and pitchman purchases worthy of mention.
The Wisconsin Baked Potato -- In the Wisconsin Products Pavilion, you'll notice a weaving line running the length of the building. Serving up piping hot locally grown spuds that aren't your ordinary potato. They are fresh and creamy. And it's a deal in itself. For just $3, this potato is a meal, topped with your choice of cheese, sour cream, chives, butter, bacon or salsa.
The Quick Chopper -- Each and every year, the Quick Chopper (also seen on infomercials) is pushed on meandering crowds in the Expo building. Sucked in by ongoing demonstrations and a persuasive pitch, I purchased the Quick Chopper two years ago and to this day, it still tops the list of my best buys. Sold four for $40, I got one for several family members and have rapidly made salsas, marinades and sauces ever since.
Herb Kohl's Milk House -- The Milk House gets a bad rap. Yes, at first, flavored milk does sound questionable, but for those who have ventured to gulp down a glass, it's a pleasant surprise. The root beer flavor tastes like a root beer float, strawberry like a milkshake and for those less adventurous, you can't go wrong with chocolate milk. It's only a quarter.
Fresh Squeezed Lemonade -- This crisp beverage is by no means special to the Wisconsin State Fair. You'll find it plastered all over the Summerfest Grounds and even at a few smaller fests around town but that doesn't mean it's not good. Litterally, several lemons go into every glass and then shaken for a fresh from the fruit favorite.

Shouldn't it be Gov. Jim Doyle in charge of the Milk House? I remember a time when it was Tommy Thompson's Milk House. Does a senator have the right to usurp a governor's Milk House throne like that? I'm no expert on Milk House heirarchy, but I believe...
