Twelve hours on the SkyGlider? That's a lot of gliding. And sky.

My botched plan to set a Guinness World Record at the Big Gig

Ever since I was a kid, I have had a strange fascination with the "Guinness Book Of World Records." I remember the chunky book with the newsprint pages and, specifically, the guy with the world's longest fingernails that looked more like finger tusks than nails. Gross. And yet ...

My Big Plan for the Big Gig this year was to set a world record on the Summerfest grounds by taking the longest consecutive ride on the SkyGlider. I went to the Guinness site and – after learning there was not a record already in place – filled out the online application.

I proposed to the Guinness people that I ride on the sky tram for all 12 hours of opening day of Summerfest. I submitted this request in early May, and the site said it would take 4-6 weeks for a response. I never heard back. (By paying a fee, you can expedite your request. I might do this next time but for the first time around, I was hoping to get the go-ahead for free.)

I had visions of live blogging from the glider all day and inviting friends and famous Milwaukeeans to take victory rides with me. I even considered making it a fundraiser of some kind. But it didn't happen. Well, not this year anyway.

Perhaps it's all for the best, because I really couldn't figure out how I would be able to go to the bathroom, short of adult diapers or setting the record for the World's Most Expansive Bladder. And neither of these options seemed particularly appealing.

wow! MagneticNorth - impressive knowledge. Molly - I was wondering, would you allow people to bring you food? beers? Can I go on a few laps with you (in four years of living here, i still havent done the sky glider). ALSO - If you're a US Cellular customer, they'll swap your battery out for you - so that your phone is always charged! I think this is a MUST for next year.

For what it's worth, when attempting an endurance record like this, you get 5 minutes per hour break time, which I believe you can accumulate. This is for exactly the reason you say, i.e. bathroom breaks.
