Despite the recent warmer than usual temperatures, the County announced this afternoon that preparations are underway to open the outdoor Slice of Ice at Red Arrow Park skating rink this weekend.

"It’s great to have the opening in sight!" said Guy Smith, chief of operations, in a press release. "All the warm weather wreaked havoc on our schedule for opening the ice rink. In addition to the need for an extended period of colder weather, Parks staff need time for the many steps involved in building the rink. This is not something that can be done with the flip of a switch."

While plans for its season opening event have yet to be announced, Slice of Ice will have its soft opening on Saturday, Dec. 19, beginning at 11 a.m. (depending on the weather). The rink plans to stay open that day until 11 p.m., and then beginning that Sunday through Christmas Eve, Slice of Ice will be open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Ice skate rentals for adults are $8 a pair, while rentals for those 17 years old and younger are $7 a pair. Those who bring their own skates can skate for free.
