Gift cards are convenient, but are they tacky gifts? |

There's a low-rumbling, ongoing holiday debate about whether or not buying a gift card as a holiday offering is a smart choice or a lazy one. Certainly, it depends on the recipient. Buying a Wal-Mart gift card for your romantically inclined girlfriend probably isn't a great idea, but for your kid's teacher, it might make all the sense in the world.
In general, is it OK to buy gift cards for holiday presents or should you keep thinking and find something more personalized? Sound off, readers, on this hot, holiday issue.
Gift cards make great gifts. Despite good intentions, most people botch gift giving. So often, people spend money on something that gets donated or re-gifted. Giving gift cards guarantees that the person will like your holiday gift, and it stretches out the season by allowing people to treat themselves after the holidays are over. Plus, where you buy the gift card requires some thought, so it's more personalized than just giving money.
Gift cards make lame gifts. If you can't take the time to pick out a gift for someone, why bother giving one? Gift cards scream, "I had no idea what to get you, so here." I guess if someone I don't know very well gave me a gift card it would be OK, but if a loved one gave me a gift card I would feel slightly insulted.

I think it all depends on how well you know the person. I tried to give gift card to my father, but he never gets around to using them ever! Even to places he goes often, he always forgets them. I will from now on buy an actual present, since I don't want to waste money on them anymore. On the other hand, I will give out gift cards that you can use anywhere.. those ones with the visa/master card symbol, which are handy if you have teenagers, or those hard to buy people, so they can buy what they want with the gift!

I would rather give and receive cash over gift cards. I am still bitter from when I bought my parents a lovely weekend away and a round of golf over $300 and they never used it. I rather give you the cash!

Could it be someone has a personal stake in recommending a B&B gift card? Seriously, if you give this kind of gift card it would have to be for several hundred dollars. Who wants a gift card like this if they have to fork over quite a bit of their own money to use a gift card that is only for $25? I do not mind getting gift cards as I am pretty picky about what I buy. As for giving gift cards, if I know the person well I have a good idea of their tastes so I'll buy a present not a gift card. My 18 year old son gets a gift card, whether it be for gas, restaurant or retail store, his whims constantly change.

Its the thought that goes into a gift that makes it a good gift, not whether its a specific item or a gift card. BedandBreakfast.com Gift Cards are a wonderful and personal gift for many folks who already have all the stuff they could possibly want. What they really need is the gift of a getaway, to relax and to refresh and take a break from their stressful day-to-day lives. Since they can be personalized with your own photo and message, they show that you really care. Last but not least, they are welcome at over 4000 independently owned B&Bs across the U.S. and Canada, including many in Wisconsin, so this is a gift that supports the local economy.
