So, the white smoke has been seen through the window. And if it isn't the Sistine Chapel, Lambeau Field is almost as holy.
The people in Green Bay have this whole papal signal thing backward. The white smoke is supposed to be when the old guy is dead and a new guy has been chosen.
In Green Bay, the white smoke means the new guy needs to sit down because the old guy has suddenly been resurrected.
Lest anyone jump too high or cheer too loudly, let us be aware that with Brett Favre and the Packers, the drama, as Yogi said, "ain't over `till it's over."
"It's over" will occur Sept. 8, when the Packers host the Vikings in the first game of the 2008 season. Until then, it's still up in the air, as far as I'm concerned.
With that in mind, we are going to have another test today. A couple of weeks ago, we had a true/false test. Today it will be a multiple choice test. Make sure you read all the instructions before you begin.
Look at the four alternatives below. Then rank them twice. The first ranking should be what you think will happen. The second should be what you want to happen.
Now, sharpen your No. 2 pencils and get to work. Use the Talkback feature and we'll report the results. The winner, determined by having a correct answer -- plus any comments that really strike my fancy, and my fancy alone, gets a T-shirt or other gift of almost immeasurable value from OnMilwaukee.com and me.
A. Brett Favre does not play football during the 2008 season.
He could take the Packers' bribe of $25 million or whatever, and go back home to Mississippi.
You know that Favre legacy thing everyone was talking about? Well, if he takes the money, consider it shot to hell. He might as well be part of Abscam or the Black Sox. And the Packers franchise, long held out as an example of something very special has suddenly turned into the home for a band of mobsters paying off their opponents.
Favre could also just get tired of this whole mess and decide to stay retired. He could become the coach at Oak Grove High School, where he's been working out.
He could become a talking head on one of the network football shows, but that seems unlikely, since he'd have to shave, take his hat off, wear a tie and have to actually talk when the camera came to him.
He could lose his starting job to Aaron Rodgers and retire, again, but that doesn't seem fair.
B. Brett Favre will play for the Packers during the 2008 season.
There are any number of ways this could happen.
Brett could compete with Aaron Rogers and beat him out for the job, like Tiger Woods would beat out the Milwaukee public links champion for Golfer of the Year honors.
Rodgers could go down with a season-ending injury and the Packers would be forced to turn to Favre .
The day the Packers cut down to 80 players, coach Mike McCarthy gets a petition from his players demanding that Favre be the starter. The vote is 79-1.
C. Brett Favre will play for the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears during the 2008 season.
This one is pretty hard to get your arms around. Can you possibly imagine the first game of the season, Monday night? Lambeau Field: the night we were set to retire No. 4; Erin Andrews on the sideline; a huge, national audience.
When the Packers announced that this would be the jersey-retiring game, president Mark Murphy said: "It's a division rival, obviously. And it's a national TV game and given what Brett meant to Packers fans and the number of fans around the country, we wanted to make sure everyone would see it. That was important." Not so much anymore, Mark.
Can you possibly see Favre running out onto the field wearing either a Viking or Bear uniform? If it happens, I puke.
D. Brett Favre will play for some NFL team during the 2008 season.
This one may be difficult because Favre has to approve any trade the Packers might make. It's fair to say that he's not going to any team that doesn't have much of a chance to make the Super Bowl.
There is considerable doubt about what it would take to get Favre to agree to join a team. A chance to be on a winner is obviously one consideration. But how about money? It's possible that some crazed owner (Dan Snyder) could be willing to break the bank to sign Favre. What if it was a ridiculous amount? Would Favre be able to resist? Tough call.
There you go. The choices in order and here are mine.
Likely to happen: D, C, B and A.
What I want to happen: B, A, D and C.

I concur with your assessment. D, C, B and A are whats likely to happen, though CDBA is a close second at this point. And I would prefer to see him back in the green and gold or retire as a packer, but a year or two with Tampa wouldn't bother me so much. Having him on the bears or the vikes would be tough. If he does join the vikes, hopefully he plays like he used to in that dome up there and we still win the division. So what I want to happen is: B, A, D and C.

B....no other option. This goes back to Ted T's firing of Mike Sherman. Things won't be right in G B for Farve until Thompson's gone. McCarthy is caught in the middle.

Likely to happen C, D, A, B What I would prefer to happen-A, C, D, B Not to mention if he does play again it will be short lived and a huge mistake as he is destined to get injured due to the Madden Video game curse. Something not to be taken lightly.
