Amid mass defections on the coaching staff and rumors of financial difficulty, the Bonecrushers, Milwaukee's first-year franchise in the Continental Indoor Football League, went on the offensive late last night.
The team issued a press release headlined: "With apologies to Mark Twain, the news of our death has been greatly exaggerated."
Here is the text of the release, which also is available at mkebonecrushers.com.
"Let's cut to the chase. Pretty much everything you've heard is wrong.
"Several news outlets have been reporting changes with the Milwaukee Bonecrushers organization, but they are fabrications and innuendo. Here are the facts. We came to Milwaukee to put together a winning team, a team the fans could be proud of. But with an abysmal 0-3 start, we felt it was critical we make a change and make it fast. On Monday evening, we made sweeping changes in the front office and brought in a new General Manager, Jordan Kopac, and a new coaching staff led by Michael Tumbleson. We would have liked our head coach, Gilbert Brown, to remain with the organization, but we respect his decision to resign.
"We are not bankrupt. We have paid all our players. We are not folding nor canceling the season. We are here to stay."
The Bonecrushers will introduce their new coach at a news conference this morning. The situation this week is generating more news coverage than the tea did for its first three games.

SugarCreekBoy...to answer a few of your comments... From talking with the owners, The Bonecrushers ownership spent 2 years researching and planning the development of this team....they didn't just wake up one morning and say "Let's start a football team" They have been behind the 8-ball since they held their first press conference last August, because immediately people (and the media) said they wouldn't last. As far as what has transpired this week, I have spoken with the owners...I am not going to speak for them, but let's just say they were unhappy with 0-3 and wanted to move in the right direction. Don't count these guys out yet....there is still 2 months left in this season..lots of time to turn it around. There is a lot of desire in the hearts of the coaching staff and the players (I got to see it first hand a practice last night)...they all want to win and will do whatever they can to get the W!!

I had the pleasure of seeing the bonecrushers play last weekend, not only was entertaining but family friendly. This is their first season, I for one am happy they are making the changes, it is better than sitting back and doing nothing. Hey, it can't get worse. I don't think anyone thinks they are heading for a championship this year. Lets just get that 1st win.

I find it hard to believe the team in all this. A co-owner is also the nose tackle. I'm sure he enjoys being the boss off the field and having the coaches be his boss on the field. I'm sure some egos got into it. It's a first-year team trying to stay alive, and if ownership thinks it's got a championship team it's crazy. A bunch of semi-pro guys basically taken during open tryouts has no chance. They need to stry to survive in the first few years and try to keep building. Too bad this thing will fall apart by 2009. I just don't see it lasting. It sounds pretty thrown together and out of whack. NO TEAM does crap like this three games into its existence. I doubt that ALL the coaches stepping down at the same time are a good thing.

I am glad to see the Bonecrushers did not wait until the press conference to address issues. Fight the good fight. I look forward to the remainder of this season for the team!
