I went to the Bucks tip-off luncheon yesterday at the Hyatt and the team formally introduced its 2009-10 version to some cheers, some hopes and a little, let's face it, whistling in the wind.
This is a franchise that has had a recent history of disappointing everybody. The last time the Bucks were a real good team George Karl was the coach and Anthony Mason had yet to put his big, fat butt on the Milwaukee bench. We have suffered. For two decades, this has been a poor basketball team, interrupted by one exciting season when the century turned.
What we have gotten used to with the Bucks is a sad rhapsody of dashed hope, confusing expectations, sorrowful fodder for the talk show mavens and a lingering taste on our tongue of the way things might be someday.
There have been slogans galore. "Ready to Rise." "Green and Growing." "Our Team. Our Town." "Every Day is Game Day." And this year we have: "Work Hard. Play Hard." Maybe those slogans sold a few extra tickets early in the season. By the time the season wound down, the slogans had become a joke.
Having said that, the Bucks and the NBA are my favorites. I love football. I like baseball. But the NBA really gets my juices flowing. The funny thing is that I played football and baseball, but never played basketball. And still, it's my favorite, by a long shot. And my choice is not without reason.
Herewith, 10 reasons to favor the Bucks / NBA over football and baseball:

it's funny how an article about "Bucks excitement" has a picture at the top showing a 1/3 full Bradley Center and the Bucks on the court just standing around. and to say other players are overpaid does not make Redd any less overpaid. bcp, it's great you're a fan and optimistic, but to compare jennings to iverson or paul at this point is ridiculous. and to call Kucoc a celebrity is as big of a stretch. anyway, i DO wish 'em well.

BCP-Thank you for responding to my post. You do make some good points and I can feel your passion for the Bucks. However, we will not totally agree on Redd. Im sure he is in good shape, but better then last year when he came back from playing on the Olympic team? I doubt that, but again, see your point. Also, Redd makes more money then Curry and Oneal was a game changer at one point and now injuries have slowed him down. Redd was never that, and with Curry, two wrongd dont make a right! I believe Bogut could reach those numbers you posted if Redd wasnt taking so many of the shots. His refusal to get anyone involved for the sake of the team is really what makes the Bucks terrible to watch for me. I agree with you on Jennings and RJ, but to me, RJ's play last year just backed up my point in regards to Redd. If you are the focal point of the offense and put up enough shots, many could do what Redd has done for the Bucks during his tenure. He also refuses to rebound and/or pass! I have to be honest, thank god for Jennings, because that will be the only reason I will be watching this year!

I don't think 30 games is a stretch. Redd and Bogut missed significant portions of the year and they're back. They've upgraded at point guard and gotten better at power forward. I don't think this will be a good team but 30 should be reachable barring injury or trades (like Redd). On the bright side, they're up on the Cavs!

I hate the NBA more every year. Last night was the season opener and they've added more stupid instant replay rules. There is so much gray area on every call. There is so much bickering and complaining it just makes me sick. Last year, I gave up on the Bucks and flirted with some new teams. This year I think it's just over. I will stick with college ball. Good riddance NBA. If there is any league that should take a fall in this economy, it should be the NBA. They need to make drastic changes to this sport. Raise the rim.
