This evening, the Milwaukee Brewers announced they signed free agent first baseman Chris Carter to a one-year contract. Carter will likely fill the hole left at first base after the team traded Adam Lind to the Seattle Mariners in December.

Over six seasons in the major leagues for the Oakland Athletics and, most recently, the Houston Astros, the 29-year-old first baseman has put up a career .217 batting average with 109 home runs and 280 RBI. Over the last three seasons, however, Carter has racked up 90 home runs – good for eighth in the MLB – and helped the Astros clinch a Wild Card spot last season by batting .353 with six home runs and 10 RBIs over the team's final stretch of 15 games.

"We are pleased to be able to add Chris to our organization," said Brewers GM David Stearns – also formerly of the Houston Astros – in a statement. "Over the past three seasons, Chris has proven to be one of the most consistent power threats in the game. We believe that his skills and experiences will complement our team well and provide additional production to our lineup."

In order to make room for Carter on the team's 40-man roster, the Brewers also announced they designed catcher Josmil Pinto for assignment.
