As expected, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was announced today as the 2009 National League Most Valuable Player.

Pujols took all 32 first-place votes, becoming the sixth player in history to win the award by unanimous vote.

Brewers first-baseman Prince Fielder finished fourth in the voting despite putting up MVP-caliber numbers. Fielder hit .299 with 46 home runs and a franchise-record and league-leading 141 RBI. His homers were second only to Pujols and was also second with a 1.014 OPS, .602 slugging percentage and 356 total bases.

Fielder was the only player in baseball to play in all 162 games this season and probably saved the Brewers from an even more dismal season.

Florida shortstop Hanley Ramirez came in second, followed by Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who hit .279 with 45 home runs and 141 RBI (tying Fielder) for the National League Champions.

They should only announce the winner of the award - not 2nd, 3rd, 4th places. I really don't think any player gives a damn where he finishes if he doesn't finish 1st. Regardless, Pujols was easy winner.

yeah, after Pujols there can be no player more valuable to his team last season than Fielder. odd voting, but whatever. this awards crap is so unimportant. in fact one could argue the Brewers probably wouldn't be able to afford Fielder without an MVP to his name. should he win one, you could remove the "probably" from the last sentence. honestly, the recognition is nice, but it's hard enough to sign decent players without adding "all-star", or "MVP", or "Cy Young winner" in front of players names.

JK, I'm not saying that Ramierez isn't a good player..but i am saying that i think he is being overrated in comparison to Fielder...and I base that opinion on these stats...by the way, i've watched plenty of baseball for the past 34 years including this past season. Ramierez GP BA HR RBI OBP SLG 151 .342 24 106 .410 .543 Fielder GP BA HR RBI OBP SLG 162 .299 46 141 .412 .602

GC-Although I too think Fielder deserved better, i question how much baseball you watch to ask a question like that about Hanley...ahhh....lets see.....how about that he hit around .350 for the year and is one of the best young players in baseball!?

The MVP award is such BS.....it should be renamed the "Most Valuable Player On a Team We Like" award. Fielder was the ONLY player in MLB to play in all 162 games? Yeah, he really deserved 4th....
