It's clearly halftime at Lambeau in this photo taken Jan. 8, 1983.

Bernacchi signs prints of Packers' "halftime" photo today

A mere three decades ago film used to be in cameras and when a photographer shot in black and white it was not because they flicked the wrong switch. It was art, not aim and shoot.

David Bernacchi was bouncing around the venerable Lambeau Field filled with such thoughts on Jan. 8, 1983. Reagan was president and the Packers were mired in their decade of mediocrity. If it weren't for a strike-shortened season filled in with replacement players, there would have been no playoffs for the good guys.

There, Bernacchi stumbled over a classic Lambeau moment when pull tabs were still part of beer cans. They were half done with their beer load and the game was half over, too. Synchronicity from the gods as they say.

Bernacchi shot, the Packers scored (won, actually, 42-16 over the Cardinals) and the picture has lived on, gracing the walls of some of the more hallowed drinking establishments of our fair city and even in Australia and France. Count the cans and the answer is clear, it's "Halftime."

To commemorate that hallowed moment, Bernacchi will sign and offer up prints of "Halftime," today, Jan. 8, at O'Lydia's Bar and Grill, 338 S. 1st. St. until 5 p.m. Buy a print, get a PBR to wash it down.
