Hatton started his playoff beard after the Phillies swept the Brewers earlier this month. |

Hello. And thanks for inviting me to blog about the Phillies-Brewers battle from a Philly fan's point of view. I promise to do no research, yet deliver the boorish commentary the national media would have you expect from a Philly fan. Please post your comments below and I promise to wing some D cells or dump a warm pint of Yuengling on your head.
Before I jump into the creamy filling of this battle, stick with me as I establish my creds as a Philly fan:
So, on to modern business ...
I'll resist the urge to provide a detailed retrospective of the Phillies's 2008 season. I'll only say this about that: The season was filled with constant ups and downs. Utley starts hot and then fades (is he hurt?) Howard plays like a man twice his age, but then turns it on for the September push (MVP-worthy? Not sure.) Myers loses all confidence in his fastball and drops deep into the minors (no irony in calling him an Iron Pig). And Rollins falls from his 2007 MVP season and torments Phillies fans with idiotic comments.
But at the end of the drama, they picked the right time to surge, as if a replay from September 2007. It was just 12 months ago that they came on strong to overtake a collapsing Mets team. In fact, the Phillies' surge was amazing to watch. It would have garnered more national recognition had not the Rockies put in an even more amazing late season push.
So now that the Phillies made it to the playoffs again, what will be different for them this year? A few thoughts:
One closing thought: I do not know the thoughts of the average Brewers fan on Geoff Jenkins leaving for Philly. Given the resemblance (both physical and contractual) to Brett Favre, I have to wonder how you will feel if he comes up with a pinch hit home run to beat you. Or if you'll cheer if you see him strike out three times. As an American I expect you Midwestern types to offer him a laurel, and a hearty handshake as he returns. As a Philly fan I expect you to boo his ass and ping him with nine volts.

Ok being born & raised in Philadelphia and about 12 years older than this Hatton guy let me give you a real feel about the Phillies 2008 season. I'll give you the fact that this season was an up & down one but frankly what Phillies season isn't? Some of your points were valid but if you don't LIVE in Philadelphia you really don't know. The season began relatively well. Pat Burrell was smoking hot through early June while Ryan Howard was struggling mightily. The best second baseman on the planet was an early MVP contender with a torrid start as well. If you knew ANYTHING about baseball and it's history you should realize that last seasons NL MVP, Jimmy Rollins had a year for the ages. Just look up his numbers. No other shortstop in the history put up the kind og numbers like J-Roll did in 2007. Nuff said. Regardless of what you think the fans felt when he spoke honestly of Phille fans, the faithful didn't get all up in arms concerning his comments. Until August the pitching staff, both the starters and relievers were really good. Jamie Moyer at 45 pitched great and tutored the younger guys on the staff about becoming more mature pitchers. Cole Hamels, who by the way is not an ass, pitched more innings and had better command of his stuff that proves that this kid will be a star in the league. Brett Myers has some mental issues and was sent down to the minors and then came back on a mission to prove that he desrved to be a starter. His numbers after coming back to parent club were second only to some rent-a-player named CC something. Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino more than made up for the Aaron Rowland departure. Let m,e ask you a question Hatton, would you have paid him $55 million dollars over 7 years for a guy that had been hurt over his tenure as a Phillie? Come on we have leaders and theirs names are Rollins, Utley, Burrell and our manager Charlie Manuel. Granted ther were times prior to September that the fans thought we may not make it to the playoffs but then September came along. Ryan Howard had a smoking hot month and put the big man into the NL MVP race. One of the unfortunate things that happened that Geoff Jenkins, your beloved ex Brewer, had a rough time adjusting and getting playing time. So now the first two games of the NLDS have been great for us. Our pitching staff has been great and last night's at-bats by Brett Myers will go down as legendary in Phils history. Now we go back to Miller Park and we have the ageless wonder Jamie Moyer going in game 3. In last 2 seasons Moyer has pitched the clinching games for the Fightin' Phils and no doubt will pitch well come Saturday night. People who live in Washington aren't in Philadelphia so Hatton try to honor the city where America was born. Good luck in game 3 Brew Crew. It may be your last of 2008.

Not speaking for any other Milwaukeean but I will be happy to "give you a laurel, and a hearty handshake" before the game and maybe buy you a beer. But during (and depending on the outcome of the game/series) I may not be so friendly. But it is good to know that Phillie fans are not such knobs like our friends at Miller Park South in Chicago.
