Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brian Shackelford, who was arrested on a charge of third-degree sexual assault Wednesday night, was released from jail this afternoon and is now scheduled to appear at the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 21, police sources said.
Shackelford, who has not been formally charged, was arrested shortly after the Reds' 6-5 loss to the Brewers Wednesday night at Miller Park following an incident that occurred July 4 at the team hotel, sources said. According to sources, Shackelford met a local woman through a Web site, had dinner with her and returned to the team hotel, where the alleged assault took place.
Police continue to investigate the case. It is not clear whether charges will be issued.
Shackelford, a 6' 1" lefty who struck out Prince Fielder, the only hitter he faced, in the game Wednesday, did not travel to Atlanta, where the team is playing the Braves this weekend. He was optioned to Class AAA Louisville on Thursday afternoon.
