Brewers right-hander Ben Sheets will be the starting pitcher for the National League in the All-Star Game Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Sheets, the first Brewers pitcher to start in the All-Star Game, makes his fourth appearance in the Midsummer Classic. He'll throw to catcher Geovany Soto of the Chicago Cubs.

National League manager Clint Hurdle of Colorado selected him for the honor.

"I got to take a good luck at Ben in midweek," Hurdle said at a press conference Monday. "The fact that he struck out 11 of us in five innings kind of caught my eye. I'm real smart like that.

"I like everything about him. He's blue collar; he brings his lunch pail to work every day. I thought it would be an opportunity that he'd embrace. He has a lot of energy, a lot of passion. He's a perfect match for me."

Said Sheets: "It's a great honor. I can guarantee you (Colorado manager Clint Hurdle) is the most popular man in Louisiana today.

Cleveland left-hander Cliff Lee will start for the American League.

Brewers leftfielder Ryan Braun, the No. 2 vote getter in the National League fan balloting, will bat seventh.
