The Milwaukee Brewers today named Ted Simmons bench coach. In a corresponding move, Dale Sveum has switched from bench coach to third-base coach. Sveum replaces former third-base coach Nick Leyva, who was not invited back for the 2008 season. The announcements were made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.

"Ted has worn many hats and has seen the game from many different perspectives," said Melvin. "He has been asked to take his energy, wisdom and knowledge of how to play winning baseball to the dugout and field. As a former General Manager, Director of Player Development and Major League Scout, along with a 21-year playing career, he has shown his passion and dedication for all aspects of the game."

Simmons, 58, will be making his professional coaching debut next season. He began his front office career with St. Louis as Director of Player Development from 1988-'91 before joining Pittsburgh as General Manager from 1991-'92. Simmons then served as Major League Scout/Assistant to the General Manager with Cleveland from 1993-'98. He has spent the last nine years with San Diego as Vice President of Baseball Operations (1999-2001) and Major League Scout/Assistant to the General Manager (2002-'07).
