Latrell Sprewell will not be charged in connection with an alleged assault of a woman on his boat last month.
Milwaukee Police sources told OnMilwaukee.com today that the 21-year-old woman informed the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office today that she has decided not to press charges against the former National Basketball Association all star.
Sprewell, 35, was questioned by police Aug. 30 after the woman told police that she was having consensual sex with Sprewell on his yacht, "Milwaukee's Best" when he began to choke her. After the boat returned to shore, Sprewell drove the woman to her home and she admitted herself to the sexual assault treatment center at Aurora Sinai Medical Center. Police observed red marks on the woman's neck.
Sprewell appeared at police headquarters the following with his attorneys and cooperated with the investigation, allowing police to search his yacht.
Sprewell, 35, played at Milwaukee Washington High School and later at the University of Alabama, and he was the 24th overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors.
Despite his success in the league, including a trip to the NBA Finals with the New York Knicks in 1999, Sprewell also is known for the 1997 choking incident involving then Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo.
The incident occurred during a practice, when Carlesimo yelled at Sprewell. Sprewell choked Carlesimo before teammates could pull the player away. Sprewell returned to the gym later that day and had to be pulled away from his coach.
The Warriors voided his contract, and the NBA expelled him from the league. The contract was eventually restored and his suspension reduced to the remainder of the season.
