Now, that's a goal worth achieving.
After 95 minutes and 46 seconds of mud-soaked soccer Saturday, Tyler Metcalf did what no one else was able to do in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 state soccer final.
He put the biscuit in the basket.
Metcalf found himself in the clear in front of the Madison Memorial net after taking a crisp pass from teammate Jacob Pope. And the senior forward scored the game-winner as Muskego took a 1-0, double-overtime victory to give the school its first state soccer title.
The 27-1-1 Warriors -- who for the last two years have sported Mohawk-style haircuts for the state tournament -- also advanced to the state final last year, but lost to Milwaukee Marquette, 5-0. This year, Arrowhead beat Marquette in a quarterfinal game Thursday, but Muskego beat Arrowhead in a Friday semifinal to advance.
Double overtime -- and mud -- were the orders of the day on Saturday. All three championship matches went to double overtime, and all three were decided by scores of 1-0.
After three days of rain-soaked soccer at the Uihlein Soccer Complex on the northwest side of Milwaukee, the Division 1 final had to be moved off the main field and onto the secondary field.
In Division 2, Fox Valley Lutheran of Appleton (23-3-4) got a goal from Paul Stuebs at the 96:45 mark to beat Catholic Memorial (19-5-2). In Division 3, Cam Casper scored on an assist from Erik Berkowitz at 95:22 to give Racine St. Catherine's (20-6) a victory over Kohler (23-5-2).
RUNNING IN RAPIDS
Leading a slew of terrific area performances, boys runners from the Greater Metro Conference dominated the Division 1 competition in the WIAA state cross country meet on Saturday.
The Greater Metro produced the individual champion and the top two finishers in the D-1 boys team standings at the state meet, held at The Ridges Golf Club just outside Wisconsin Rapids.
Sussex Hamilton senior Marcus Paulson won the Division 1 boys race, covering the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes 41.0 seconds, 2.7 seconds ahead of Madison East senior Gabe Heck. But it was neighboring Brookfield Central that won the team chase, scoring 99 points to edge Brookfield Central's total of 115.
Here's how team scoring works: Point values matching the places earned by each team's top five runners -- out of seven allowed on the team -- are added to create a final score, and the lowest score wins. (Places earned by individual qualifiers, such as Paulson, aren't counted in the team point count).
Brookfield Central senior Will Casey finished fifth overall (16:01.2), and senior teammate Tim Peterson was 18th overall (16:31.1). Marquette was led by senior Jake Erschen, who was third overall (15:46.4).
Other area runners who cracked the top 10 were junior Aaron Derner of Waterford (ninth, 16:17.7) and Russell Sandvold of Arrowhead (16:20.8).
Arrowhead senior Gabby Levac successfully defended her individual championship in the 4,000-meter Division 1 girls race, finishing in 14:36.7 to beat Mukwonago senior Blair Doney by 1.7 seconds.
However, Whitefish Bay was not able to defend its championship in the Division 1 girls team standings. The Blue Dukes totaled 142 points to finish a distant second behind Wausau East, which totaled 75 points and was led by third-place finisher Katelyn Stine, a sophomore.
Sophomore Emma-Lisa Murphy led Whitefish Bay, finishing seventh overall (14:57.4). Also from the area, Waukesha North junior Jenna McMiller was fourth (14:50.5), Germantown senior Lizzie Wendt was fifth (14:56.2), and Oconomowoc sophomore Mandy Prom was ninth (14:58.9).
Shorewood won the Division 2 boys team championship with 81 points, followed by Nekoosa/Port Edwards with 92 and Wisconsin Lutheran with 117. Pewaukee was fifth at 154.
Individually, Catholic Memorial senior John Luterbach was the winner (5,000 meters, 15:46.3), followed by senior Peter Drews of Shorewood (15:55.1) and senior Alec Holguin of Cudahy (16:07.0). Shorewood's Ben Tyler took 10th (16:30.8).
Pewaukee led the area charge in the Division 2 girls team race, winning with 62 points. Wisconsin Lutheran was second with 134, Shorewood was fourth with 147 and Catholic Memorial took fifth with 180.
Fond du Lac Winnebago Lutheran senior Marya Haegler was the individual champ (14:33.9). Pewaukee senior Hannah Frett was second overall (4,000 meters, 15:04.7), and defending champion Morgan Sickels, a senior at Catholic Memorial, was third (15:05.0). Shorewood junior Emily Bachhuber took eighth overall (15:26.2).
Led by individual champ Josh Mulloy (5,000 meters, 16:15.4), Cedar Grove-Belgium scored 68 points to win the Division 3 boys title. The Rockets were followed by Racine Prairie with 76 points. Brookfield Academy senior Nathan Heppe was sixth (16:38.9), and Racine Prairie's Carl Horlborn was 10th (16:56.7).
Sophomore Molly Seidel of University Lake School in Hartland earned a repeat individual title in the Division 3 girls race, finishing 4,000 meters in 14:33.9, a full 29 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Edgar edged Cedar Grove-Belgium, 107-108, to win the team title.
VOLLEYBALL FIELD SET
First, the Nicolet girls volleyball team squeaked out a victory on Thursday over Menomonee Falls, ranked fifth in the state by the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association. Then, in a WIAA Division 1 sectional final on Saturday night, the Knights rejoiced after winning a five-set thriller over second-ranked Watertown. The scores: 25-21, 25-18, 21-25, 22-25, 17-15.
The reward for seventh-ranked Nicolet? A shot at No. 1 Muskego in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament on Thursday at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
Coach Dann Jacobson's team made its only other state appearance in 1981. Karen Anderson's Warriors, on the other hand, are making their eighth state trip since 1996, winning in 2005 and taking second in 2006.
In other Division 1 sectional finals on Saturday, fourth-ranked Burlington held off Westosha Central in five sets, and third-ranked Divine Savior Holy Angels knocked off Oak Creek. The Demons and Dashers will meet in a quarterfinal on Thursday, with the winner taking on Muskego or Nicolet in the semifinal round Friday. The final is set for Saturday.
Sixth-ranked Kaukauna and No. 8 Middleton are in the other half of the Division 1 bracket.
In Division 2, second-ranked Waukesha Catholic Memorial won a five-set thriller over third-ranked Kettle Moraine Lutheran on Saturday - 26-24, 21-25, 25-21, 19-25, 16-14 -- to advance to a state semifinal on Friday against unranked Tomahawk. Advancing in the other bracket were No. 5 Madison Edgewood and No. 4 Appleton Xavier. Xavier defeated top-ranked Waupun, the defending state champion, on Saturday.
In Division 4, top-ranked Burlington Catholic Central, the defending state champion, lost on Saturday to third-ranked Manitowoc Lutheran.
