Other than Walt Disney World, what should I do on a mini-vacation to Orlando? |

As part of our AirTran Free Recession Buster Getaway Contest series, I'm travelling to sunny Orlando for a few days next week. Home of Disney World and the Convention Capital of the southern United States, I'm setting out to find the other side of Orlando; the hidden gems of cultural, culinary and visitor-worthy distinction.
Every winter and spring, hundreds of Wisconsinites flock to the coastal beaches of Florida for a warm vacation or spring break. But, what about landlocked Orlando? Boasting the same sunny weather, where would you visit if you had a couple days in Orlando?
So, aside from Walt Disney World and the surrounding theme parks, what are your visitor's suggestions for Orlando? Let me know and we'll see where I end up next week on my mini-vacation.

I agree with floss. Florida is an interesting state, but Orlando sucks.

You absolutely have to go to Christini's Ristorante Italiano. They have a spectacular menu and wine list. We've been there twice and have never come away disappointed. This place is a hit with celebrities as you'll see on their website. They've received many awards and Zagat considers them a "treasure among restaurants". If that isn't enough, you will be serenaded by a gentleman on the accordian. It will be a night to remember!

Leaving Orlando should be your top priority when you are in Orlando.

If you want really good New York style Italian food, then go to Positano on west highway 50 in Ocoee (in shopping center at intersection of hwy 50 a.k.a. Colonial Drive and Good Homes Road--just off the exit of the E-W expressway. It's a dual restaurant, with a "fancy" side and a pizzeria. You can get everything in the pizzeria that is offered in the fancy side, but you can only get pizza in the pizzeria--got it? I used to live in Windermere, and I was a resident when this restaurant opened. I visited last March and although I suspected a change in management, the food seemed just as good as I remembered. Not cheap, but not a tourist rip-off either.

we visited a friend who lives there (actually Celebration) a few years ago and went to a great spanish/cuban place called Columbia in the town of Celebration. It was so tasty...the paella was really great from what I remember...and Celebration is really easy to get to from Orlando, that is if you are renting a car. Have fun!
