Summerfest certainly had crowded days in 2008, but not enough to compete with last year. |

Festivals both big and small are reporting a decrease in attendance this year. Summerfest, for example, reported a 6.8 percent decrease in 2008, and smaller festivals like the Waukesha County Fair had 25 percent fewer visitors this year than last.
Do you think this is an ongoing trend and that people are less interested in going to these functions or that uncomfortable weather and a struggling economy are the reasons why folks are saying no to fairs and festivals? Sound off, Milwaukee.
It's weather and finances. Low attendance numbers this year does not imply people are losing interest in fairs and festivals. It is a temporary situation. This happens all the time, numbers go down, and then the next year they shoot back up again. Plus, weather and finances did affect the numbers this year, and both of these things can change next year, making the fairs and festivals more profitable again.
Fairs and festivals are out. A lot of people stopped going to big outdoor venues like Summerfest because the entertainment has gone down in quality. Meanwhile, prices keep going up. People are still spending money on entertainment this summer, but they're not picking fairs and festivals as outlets for their entertainment dollars.

Raise the prices. Summerfest should be at least $20 at the gate. It's too cheap and by raising the cost, you increase the perception of value and create demand. Pure and simple. Raise the prices. No one wants to go to a $12 festival as it screams cheap, not as good as it could be and we know we aren't that good but still want you to come. Raise the bar, raise the prices and follow the pro sports model.

I went out to Summerfest and probably would go again for Italian, definitely German and every other Friday, but the main event (Summerfest) was not exciting for me enough to make me pay $10 on a regular basis. I'd say make tickets lower for the price, or bring at least 1 really big name for every day of the fest. The same for ethnic festivals, why would I pay $10-14 if there's no one I know on the stage? Mark it, the ticket is not for the food, for the food and beer I would have to pay extra, it's for entertainment. And it must be worth it.

If the Dark Knight movie can make 300 million in 10 days what does that say about the economy? If people have no problem shelling out rediculously high ticket prices to watch the Brewers play baseball what does that say about the ecomomy. If music lovers can shell out up to $1000 for Madonna or Rolling Stone tickets what does thatt say about our ecomomy?

How about all the above? And it's happening everywhere across the country - even those hipster fests have reported bad numbers this year.

HAHA, yeah. Pres Bush and that darn "FU Milwaukee and Your Festivals bill" I think it's all about the economy and the fact that travel expenses have quadrupled in the last year.
